I often tell my clients that the most important work we will do together is at the beginning of their branding process. That’s when we start to define core values, identify “good words and bad words” for their business, and develop key visual messages for print and web. By the time we get to looking at the first draft of their logo, the most important work is done.

Whether they are in need of a complete branding package, a brand “refresh” or simply some collateral marketing materials, I like to start all clients at the beginning of this process. If they are willing, I ask clients to complete this brand survey, which helps both clients and me to begin thinking about their big picture goals. The survey is the beginning of the creative conversation between myself and the client, and it’s supposed to be fun! I want clients to rediscover a sense of playfulness in the branding process — because it will show in the final product.
